Prior to European colonization, the Pacific Coast of North America was one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas on the continent. It had been home to hundreds of Indigenous cultures since the arrival of human beings more than 12,000 years ago. European exploration in the 16th and 17th centuries led to the colonization of much of the area by the [[Spanish State|Spanish]] Empire. The Spanish-colonized areas would become part of [[United Mexican States|Mexico]] in 1821, following its successful war for independence. The region declared itself independent of Mexico twice, first in the successful 1836 Californio-led Alvarado Revolt - and later in the 1846 Anglo-led Bear Flag Revolt concurrent with the Mexican-American War. Other parts, including former 19th century [[Union of Soviet Socialist Republics|Russian]] trading posts, were ceded by the [[United Kingdom|British Empire]] to the [[United States of America|United States]] in the Oregon Treaty of 1846. Following the Mexican–American War, in 1848, the Mexican territories were likewise ceded to the United States. 19th century European settlement, driven by the fur trade, Manifest Destiny, and the discovery of precious metals, led to dramatic social and demographic changes - with devastating impact on the Indigenous population. Between 1804 and 1924, over six dozen armed conflicts and wars took place across the region between Indigenous nations and European settler colonial states - resulting in the direct deaths of tens of thousands, and the indirect deaths of hundreds of thousands through slavery, forced displacement, internment, and other intentional acts of genocide.

The area on [[Earth]] that would later become Türkiye was first inhabited by modern humans during the Late Paleolithic. Home to important Neolithic sites and some of the earliest farming areas, the area was inhabited by various ancient peoples. The Hattians were assimilated by the Anatolian peoples, such as the Hittites. Classical Anatolia transitioned into cultural Hellenization following the conquests of Alexander the Great; Hellenization continued during the Roman and Byzantine eras. The Seljuk Turks began migrating into Anatolia in the 11th century, starting the Turkification process. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rum ruled Anatolia until the Mongol invasion in 1243, when it disintegrated into Turkish principalities. Beginning in 1299, the Ottomans united the principalities and expanded. Mehmed II conquered Constantinople in 1453. During the reigns of Selim I and Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Empire became a global power. From 1789 onwards, the empire saw a major transformation, reforms, and centralization while its territory declined.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, persecution of Muslims during the Ottoman contraction and in the Russian Empire resulted in large-scale loss of life and mass migration into modern-day Türkiye from the Balkans, Caucasus, and Crimea. Under the control of the Three Pashas, the Ottoman Empire entered The Great War in 1914, during which the Ottoman government committed genocides against its Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian subjects. Anatomically modern humans emerged from the territory on Earth that was Ethiopia and set out for the Near East and elsewhere in the Middle Paleolithic period. In 980 BCE, the Kingdom of D'mt extended its realm over Eritrea and the northern region of Ethiopia, while the Kingdom of Aksum maintained a unified civilization in the region for 900 years. Christianity was embraced by the kingdom in 330, and Islam arrived by the first Hijra in 615. After the collapse of Aksum in 960, the Zagwe dynasty ruled the north-central parts of Ethiopia until being overthrown by Yekuno Amlak in 1270, inaugurating the Ethiopian Empire and the Solomonic dynasty, claimed descent from the biblical Solomon and Queen of Sheba under their son Menelik I. By the 14th century, the empire had grown in prestige through territorial expansion and fighting against adjacent territories; most notably. The first dynasty to control Manchuria was the Liao, who conquered Manchuria and Outer Mongolia as well as the adjacent part of the Sixteen Prefectures. The Liao Dynasty was overthrown by the Jin in 1115 CE, going on to conquer parts of Northern China and Mongolia. During the Yuan Dynasty, Manchuria (administered as "Liaoyang") was invaded by the northern Yuan but they were forced to surrender to the Ming in 1387, after which the Ming "pacified" the Jurchens. In the 1580s, the Jurchen chieftain Nurhaci began to unify the Jurchen tribes, founding the Later Jin Dynasty. In 1644, after peasant rebels sacked the Ming capital of Beijing, the Jurchens (now called Manchus) seized control of Beijing, establishing Qing-dynasty rule over all of China.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Qing hegemony was undermined by foreign powers who waged wars against it to spread their influence.
