United Kingdom
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is an interstellar nation situated primarily in the Sea of Clouds. A great power, the United Kingdom is one of the foremost members of the Orion Treaty Organization, as well as a founding member of the League of Nations and the Bank of Orion.
History

The land that would eventually constitute the United Kingdom were inhabited continuously since the Neolithic. With the first known settlement by Cro-Magnons around 30,000 years ago. The Roman conquest of the British Isles began in 43 CE, resulting in a nearly 400 year rule of southern Britain. The Roman period was followed by an invasion by Germanic Anglo-Saxon settlers in the 4th century CE. In 1066 CE, the Normans conquered England. With the end of the Wars of the Roses, the English state stabilized and began to grow in power, resulting by the 16th century in the annexation of Wales, the union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the establishment of the British Empire. The first industrialized country, it became the earth's foremost power for the majority of the 19th and early 20th centuries, encompassing almost a quarter of the world's landmass and population. At its height in the 1920s, the British Empire was the largest empire in history.
