History
Pre-First Scinfaxi War
The earliest evidence of human habitation of the islands on Earth that would become Australasia dates back to at least 48,000 BCE during the last glacial period. By the time of British settlement, thousands of languages were spoken across these islands - boasting some of the oldest living cultures in the world.
British colonization of these islands began in 1788 with the establishment of the penal colony of New South Wales on the continent of Australia. By the mid-19th century, most of the continent of Australia had been explored by European settlers and five additional self-governing British colonies were established, each gaining responsible government by 1890. Spurred on by prosperity from gold rushes and agricultural industries, the Australian colonies federated in 1901, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. The British Territory of Papua was ceded to Australia in 1902 and, following the end of the Great War in 1918, so too was the entirety of New Guinea.
By contrast, the Aotearoa islands were the last large habitable land on Earth to be settled by humans (1280 - 1350 CE). The 1840 Treaty of Waitangi on Aotearoa between Māori and British leaders was followed in 1841 with the creation of the British colony of New Zealand. Subsequently, a series of conflicts between the colonial government and Māori tribes resulted in the alienation and confiscation of large amounts of Māori land. New Zealand became a dominion in 1907.
