The Solar Subcluster is a subcluster of star systems located entirely within the Local Supercluster.

It is directly within the Local Cluster, situated between the Vega Cluster Coreward, the Draconis Subcluster Rimward, the Indian Arm Spinward, and the Arcturus Subcluster Trailward.

The subcluster includes several sovereign states, including: the Sirius Federation, United Centauri Republic, and the United Provinces of Tau Ceti.

The Solar Subcluster is principally comprised of eleven primary star systems: Alpha Centauri, Alpha Lyrae, Barnard's Star, Cygnus, Epsilon Eridani, Lalande, Procyon, Sirius, Sol, Tau Ceti, and Wolf 359.

Only four of the star systems of the Solar Subcluster are significantly populated: Alpha Centauri, Epsilon Eridani, Sirius, and Tau Ceti.

Etymology

From Late Middle English solar, from Latin sōlāris, from sōl (“sun”), from Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥ (“sun”).

History

The Centauri Program

The exploration of the Solar Subcluster outside of the Sol system began in 2018 with the first successful "skip" across a Cosmic String by an unmanned American spacecraft. The Centuari Program was established in the following year as a joint venture between the Soviet Union, German Reich, and ATO (historic precursor to the OTO). Manned exploration began in earnest with the successful jump of the American spacecraft "Chiron" to Alpha Centauri in 2024. Humanity's first extrasolar colony, Harmony, would be established seven years later in 2031 on a planet in the Alpha Centauri system.

Evacuation of Earth

In 2153, the evacuation of Earth was declared over following the departure of the last evacuation transport from the Sol System.

The First Solar War

In 2208, the Federal Republic of Vega declared war on the United Centauri Republic, beginning the First Solar War. Lasting for five years, the conflict would end in an armistice in 2213 recognizing Vegan territorial gains and sovereignty.

The Second Solar War

Beginning with a Vegan invasion of the Sirius Federation in 2229, the Second Solar War resumed hostilities between the Federal Republic of Vega and the powers of the Solar Subcluster. Despite the loss of the majority of the United Centauri Republic starfleet in the Battle of Cygnus in 2231, the intervention of the German Reich in that same year brought an end to the war.
