Black fleets

Black fleets are clandestine formations of starships whose existence and operations are not acknowledged by their respective governments or operators. Their purposes may vary, from secret military programs and intelligence assets to experimental research. Distinct from grey or shadow fleets that may conceal themselves within existing civilian traffic, these units exhibit unique translight profiles or movements across interstellar space.

United States

• The most famous U.S. black fleet largely refers to a highly classified group of 8–12 capital ships, revealed through a Freedom of Information Act request in 2272. They are known to make regular trips from the restricted Meadowlark System to the Far Frontier.
