The Italian Social Republic, also known as Italy, is a Legacy Nation located in the Mare Nostrum and Elysian Fields. Although widely propagandized, a mixture of its control over key translight lanes, resource rich systems, cultural soft power through applied arts, the Catholic Church, and it's naval extent throughout the Elysian Fields mark it as a Potential Superpower. A Great Power and humanity's first fascist state, Italy is a founding member of the Axis Powers, a Security Council Member of the League of Nations, and is the leader of the Pact of Rome.

History

Pre-First Scinfaxi War

The history of the area that was Italy on Earth begins with artefacts dating to around 850,000 BCE from the Lower Paleolithic period, Neanderthal inhabitation beginning around 200,000 BCE, and the arrival of modern humans around 40,000 BCE. The history of the nation of Italy goes back to the Italic peoples, most notably including the Romans, who conquered the Mediterranean world during the Roman Republic (509 - 27 BCE) and ruled it for centuries during the Roman Empire (27 BCE - 476 CE). With the spread of Christianity, Rome became the seat of the Catholic Church and the Papacy. Between late antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, Italy experienced the arrival of Germanic tribes and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. By the 11th century, Italian city-states and maritime republics expanded, bringing renewed prosperity through commerce and laying the groundwork for modern capitalism. The Italian Renaissance flourished during the 15th and 16th centuries and spread to the rest of Europe. Italian explorers discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, contributing significantly to the European Age of Discovery.

After centuries of political and territorial divisions, Italy was almost entirely unified in 1861, following wars of independence and the Expedition of the Thousand, establishing the Kingdom of Italy. From the late 19th to the early 20th century, Italy rapidly industrialized and acquired a colonial empire. From 1915 to 1918, Italy took part in the Great War with the Entente against the Central Powers. In 1922, the Italian fascist dictatorship was established.

In 1936, the founding of the Italian Empire was proclaimed - following the end of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and Italian annexation of Ethiopia.
