Military pre-positioned module (PPMs) units are caches of equipment, typically strategically positioned in order to reduce deployment response times. Individual modules range in size and in function, with possible contents including munitions and supplies. PPMs are valued for reducing demand for strategic spacelift and airlift assets by locating heavy and bulky materiel closer to the theater of operations. This allows for combatants be supported, while supply lines are developed and production industrial centers to ramp up production. PPMs also serve as a way for a nation to show its intentions during events or sensitive political periods. These may demonstrate commitment to allies and partners or enhance the deterrence of potential adversaries.

Soviet Union

As of 2285, tens of thousands of pre-positioned modules are reportedly in-use by the Soviet Union's Red Army, Navy, and Air Force in and around the Vega system. These modules have been reported to feature contents ranging from ammunition and small arms- to materials necessary to construct improvised VTOL airstrips.

Champlain Group analysts have suggested that the placement of these PPMs demonstrates a Soviet level of commitment in the Vega theater rivaling their own border territories.
