In 2285, as part of its ongoing modernization program, the Gran Colombian Army started the evaluation process of seven different main battle tanks for acquisition. After six months of evaluation and field trials, the Army finally selected the Reich’s Pz.Kpfw.39, commonly known as Panzer 39, as their future main battle tank. Among the models evaluated were also the Soviet T-640 and the American M8A5.
The existing program has a procurement target of more than 11,000 units over the next decade. To reach this objective, the deal includes direct imports and the local production of the tank under license. To allow this production, the deal also incorporates both the needed upgrades in the factories and the needed technology transfers.
