The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (US) or America, is a Legacy Nation situated predominantly in the Sea of Clouds. It is a federal presidential republic firmly rooted in the principles of liberal democracy. Its economic system is a fusion of free-market capitalism with limited, strategic government regulation and oversight. The United States is one of the most highly developed nations in the Orion Arm, ranking highly across international metrics of wealth, economic dynamism, labor productivity, quality of life, higher education and civil liberties. The United States is a founding member of OTO, the Bank of Orion, and the modern League of Nations. It is widely recognized as the vanguard of the Western Democratic Movement, due to its immense political, cultural, economic, military, and scientific power.
History
Pre-First Scinfaxi War
American history begins with the migration of Paleo-Indians over Earth's prehistoric Bering land bridge more than 12,000 years ago. Colonization by the British Empire in 1607 led to the settlement of the Thirteen Colonies which declared their independence in 1776. Victory in the ensuing Revolutionary War gave the nascent United States control over much of the East Coast of North America.
The nation continued to spread westward across the continent, admitting more states, purchasing territory from European powers, and displacing the local indigenous tribes, often violently. Sectional division over slavery led to the secession of the Confederate States of America, which fought a four-year war against those states that remained in the Union. The victory and preservation of the Union in 1865 ended the American Civil War and slavery was abolished nationally. A brief, victorious war in 1898 against Spain established the United States as a great power and it acquired former Spanish holdings in the Caribbean and Asia.
The Philippines was one such protectorate, and the site of the first recorded observation of Scinfaxi outgrowths by American researchers. In both the Evacuation Effort and First Scinfaxi War, the United States assumed a prominent role, admitting tens of millions of refugees, while also enduring significant casualties and widespread devastation. In 1947, during Operation: Hercules, seven atomic detonations took place on U.S. soil. These bombs were the direct result of the Manhattan Project, an American initiative that ultimately contributed to humanity's triumph in the conflict.
Post-First Scinfaxi War
Serious disputes over the reintegration of the Pacific Emergency Government culminated in a dual-state solution and the formation of the Pacific States of America in 1954. The aftermath of the war left the United States and its allies in the Atlantic Treaty Organization as one of the world's major political blocs, and marked the start of a prolonged ideological and geopolitical competition with the Axis Powers, Comintern, and Co-Prosperity Sphere.
In 1984, American researchers confirmed the existence of Cosmic Strings, heralding the second stage of the space race, a key aspect of the evolving Cold War. In 2024, an American spacecraft completed the first translight jump to Alpha Centauri. The United States subsequently joined the Alpha Centauri Colonization Program as a founding member and key sponsor before it withdrew from the initiative in 2039.
Throughout the latter half of the 21st century, the United States was heavily involved in the colonization of the Sea of Clouds and the mass-relocation of its population from Earth. Concurrently, it was a major backer of hundreds of independent colonies throughout the Local Cluster and Calypso Deeps. In 2076, the capital of the United States was moved to New Philadelphia to mark the nation's tricentennial.
In 2153, the United States ceased to exist on Earth following the atomic bombardment of the planet that ended the Second Scinfaxi War.
