Mandhatri 85
Mandhatri 85 is an expedition into Borehole 814 on the planet Kurugallu in the Urgulu Planetary System, located within the Well of Embers. Led by the Indian Council of Astrobiology and the United Kingdom’s Interstellar Environment Research Council, it is the 11th such expedition, and the largest undertaken to date.
Months of preparation, overseen by the two councils, preceded the expedition, which included constructing new research, housing, and transportation infrastructure on Kurugallu, ready for all the personnel and equipment of this mission. Hundreds of British and Indian scientists entered the borehole in 2285, embarking to study the architecture of the “Gateway to Hell”. They sought to explore its possible functions as part of an effort to study the now-extinct civilization that once inhabited it.
