Byblos is a planetary system located in the Calypso Deeps of the Local Supercluster. It is a K-type star orbited by by five planets, and the system is officially under quarantine by order of the League of Nations. Despite this, one of the five planets is considered settled. It is an independent star system with no sovereign polities, instead operating within a system of functional anarchy.

Astrography

Two charted translight corridors connect directly to Byblos; Ogygia to the system’s coreward, and Europa to its rimward. Byblos is considered a terminus system for those wishing to head deeper into the Calypso Deeps, and is part of the trio of stars that make up the Veiled Triangle alongside the similarly regarded Charybdis and Roche systems.

History

Byblos was surveyed between 2079 and 2085. When artificial structures were detected on Baalat Gebal, the system was placed under quarantine by the League of Nations over concerns the structures may have been linked to the Scinfaxi. Despite a 23-year long survey finding this to not be the case, the quarantine was not lifted. However, the system’s remote location means there is minimal enforcement. Settlement occurred during the Interstellar Dark Age, which saw few colonies endure the hardships of frontier living alongside the raiding and savagery that has become synonymous with that period of time. As the Dark Age passed, Turkish-backed surveyors and freelancers attempted to find a corridor that linked Byblos to the other systems of the Veiled Triangle to form a direct route through the Deeps, but had little success. Advancements made in FTL technology in the 23rd century led to a dangerous alternative forming, with vessels making hundreds of incremental jumps despite the inherent risks. The rise in traffic along this significant smuggling run led to a rise in investment and population in Byblos, which has seen some colonies within become permanently inhabited.
