Port Izumi
The Port Izumi Industrial Complex, commonly known as Port Izumi, was a 91-acre lunar transshipment hub and refinery complex located in the Hirakubo System of the Orinoco Spur. It had been owned and operated by the Kusari Group since 2271 and was destroyed in a Viet Cong attack in 2285.
History
Construction of Port Izumi was completed in 2271. Throughout its operational history, the complex served as a major logistical node in the Hirakubo System, processing and distributing vast quantities of raw materials as well as receiving hundreds of interstellar freighters each day. The complex's primary facilities were supported by manufacturing and allied services, utilities, off-sites, port-infrastructure and a colonial township that provided housing to its 45,000 employees. An orbital lift linked the terrestrial half of the facility to a modern starport in a low geosynchronous orbit, at the center of a district of freight yards, cargo terminals and anchorages.
Within the first three years of operation, Port Izumi was assessed to be competitive with the major industrial combines of other nations in spite of being a fraction of their size and built in half the time. Port Izumi was commonly assessed by the Orion Treaty Organization as a threat and part of an effort to expand Japan's influence in the Orinoco Spur.
In order to protect this site, the Kusari Group heavily militarized Port Izumi with an armed force of armored vehicles, dropships, and aerospace craft. These forces were complemented by surface anti-starship emplacements, point-defense batteries, and electronic countermeasures. Kusari additionally deployed a scout destroyer, two frigates, and militarized orbital stations supported by a network of advanced sensors and early warning posts spread throughout the surrounding space. All of these systems were operated by the Byakko Logistics private military company. According to leaked payroll records in 2283, Byakko Logistics had stationed over 5,000 personnel in the Hirakubo System.
