The Solar Subcluster is a group of star systems located entirely within the Local Cluster. The subcluster includes four colonized systems and several countries, including the Sirius Federation, United Provinces of Tau Ceti, and United Centauri Republic. These states are classified as non-legacy nations, emerging entirely in the post-Earth era.

Only four of the star systems of the Solar Subcluster are significantly populated: Alpha Centauri, Epsilon Eridani, Sirius, and Tau Ceti.

Etymology

From Late Middle English solar, from Latin sōlāris, from sōl (“sun”), from Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥ (“sun”).

Astrography

The Solar Subcluster is situated between the Vega Cluster coreward, the Draconis Subcluster rimward, the Indian Arm spinward, and the Arcturus Subcluster trailward.

Interstellar Objects

Solar Quarantine Zone

Enforced by the Joint Solar Authority, the Solar Quarantine Zone is a strict, zero-tolerance zone-of-control located around the periphery of the Sol Planetary System.

Translight Strings

There are a total of 14 translight strings connecting the 11 star systems of the Solar Subcluster. There are two nexus systems in the Solar Subcluster, with each having at least four strings converging on them: Alpha Centauri and Sirius.

History

Early Colonization Era

Centauri Program

Prior to the year 2018, the totality of Human history took place within the Solar Subcluster's Sol system. The exploration of the Solar Subcluster outside of the Sol system began in 2018 with the first successful "skip" across a Cosmic String by an unmanned American spacecraft. The Centauri Program was established in the following year as a joint venture between the Soviet Union, German Reich, and ATO (historic precursor to the OTO). Manned exploration began in earnest with the successful jump of the American spacecraft "Chiron" to Alpha Centauri in 2024. Humanity's first extrasolar colony, Harmony, would be established seven years later in 2031 on a planet in the Alpha Centauri Planetary System.

Evacuation of Earth

In 2153, the evacuation of Earth was declared over following the departure of the last evacuation transport from the Sol System.

The Cold War

First Solar War

In 2208, the Commonwealth of Vega declared war on the United Centauri Republic, beginning the First Solar War. Lasting for five years, the conflict would end in an armistice in 2213 recognizing Vegan territorial gains and sovereignty.

Second Solar War

In 2229, what would become known as the Second Solar War began with an invasion of the Sirius Federation by the Commonwealth of Vega. Joining Vega were the Republic of Vesta, United States of Juno, Silvanus Colonial Republic, Barrosa Colonial Republic, Jarandi Colonial Republic, and Kassar-Antrali Colonial Republic. Joining Sirius were the nascent Solar Treaty Organization members of the United Centauri Republic and United Provinces of Tau Ceti, as well as the Apollo Colonial Republic. Although the war initially went in Vega's favor, meeting a high-water mark in 2231 with the destruction of the bulk of the United Centauri Republic fleet in the Battle of Cygnus, the war would be brought to a decisive end that same year by the intervention of the German Reich.
