History
Pre-First Scinfaxi War
The oldest traces of archaic humans in what was France on Earth dated from approximately 1.8 million years ago. Neanderthals occupied the region into the Upper Paleolithic era, but were slowly replaced by Homo sapiens around 35,000 BCE. Agricultural development led to the advent of metallurgy between the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE. During the Iron Age, the territory of metropolitan France was inhabited by the Gauls (a Celtic people), before falling under Roman domination in 51 BC following the Gallic Wars. The Franks (a Germanic people) settled there in the 5th century and founded the Carolingian Empire in the 9th century. The empire was partitioned in 843, and West Francia became the Kingdom of France, a major power in Europe during the Middle Ages.
In 1789, the French Revolution adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, marking the end of the Ancien Régime and absolute monarchy, as well as the spread of revolutionary ideas. The country then experienced several changes of institutional regime (First Republic, First Empire, Restoration, July Monarchy, Second Republic, Second Empire) until the definitive advent of the Republic following the defeat against Prussia and the civil war of 1871. From the middle of the 16th century to the 20th century, it was the second largest colonial empire behind the United Kingdom - with colonies in Legacy Nations like the Confederation of West African States, East African Federation, Empire of Vietnam, and the United States of America. France was one of the main belligerents in the Great War.
First Scinfaxi War
Three years into the First Scinfaxi War, in 1947, representatives from the French Republic met with those from the United States of America, Greater German Reich, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom, Empire of Japan, Republic of China, and Federative Republic of Brazil in Reykjavik, Iceland. During this summit, the existence of the atomic bomb was disclosed.
Terran Interregnum
The French Crisis
In 1958, fifteen years after the First Scinfaxi War was declared over, territories of the French Republic occupied by the Greater German Reich were annexed in a betrayal of the Reykjavik Summit of 1947. Following months of growing protests, Free French forces overthrew the Marseille Regime in an overnight coup on October 19th, 1962. The following eleven days were characterized by a tense nuclear standoff between the Axis and ATO, ending with a German withdrawal and the abolition of the French Union State.
Cold War
Acadian Wars
Fought between 2274 and 2283, the Acadian Wars were a series of interrelated conflicts conducted within the Acadian Expanse. In 2278, the French Republic, along with the United States of America and the United Kingdom, participated in a military intervention on behalf of the Federation of Acadia in the ongoing conflict. After five years, this intervention succeeded in securing the partial restoration of the Federation government and the creation of several newly sovereign states.
