The High Republic of Whitehall, commonly known as Whitehall, is a non-legacy nation located in the system of the same name within the Buyan Isles. It is a middle power, a member of the League of Nations and often described as one of the Orion Arm's first transhuman societies.

Society & Economy

The economic and societal character of Whitehall has been described as both a post-capitalist and transhuman. A small “apex” class lives in total and limitless luxury, sustained by the labor of a far larger lower class. This lower strata of society, representing as much as 90% of the total population, has been kept chemically dependent on mood stabilizers, euphoric stimulants, and other anti-anxiety drugs. Over generations, this has led to what some studies have described as a distinct subset of humanity: one now born naturally compliant and chemically dependent. This lower strata readily accepts outside authority, is unable to maintain strong social bonds or independent thought, and is entirely reliant on constant chemical injection to survive.

Whitehall offers what critics have labeled a “sedation economy” to foreign investors, characterized by extremely low human labor costs. Workers are employed in sectors where full automation may be technically possible, but not economically favorable.

Both the chemical manipulation of its population and the near destitute conditions under which most citizens live, have led organizations like Amnesty Interstellar to rank Whitehall’s human rights record among the worst in the Orion Arm. Despite outward portrayals of a harmonious society, there is strong evidence of periodic mass demonstrations and violent unrest. Most disturbances are believed to dissipate on their own though others escalated unpredictably requiring the use of the Whitehall Armed Forces in their violent suppression.

Foreign Relations

Whitehall is politically isolated within the Buyan Isles, surrounded by largely unfriendly independent states and unfavorably positioned on the edge of the borderlands separating the COMINTERN from the Co-Prosperity Sphere. Its astropolitical situation, military unsustainable, has led to strong ties with the United Kingdom, French Republic, and United States all of which maintain military bases across the Whitehall planetary system.
