Mediana Colonial Republic
The Mediana Colonial Republic, commonly known as Mediana, is a Non-Legacy Nation located in the Acadian Expanse. It is a Small Power, a Colonial Republic, and a member of the League of Nations.
History
Pre-Acadian Wars
The Mediana planetary system was initially colonised as part of the Federation of Acadia.
Before the breakup of the Acadian Federation and the beginning of the Acadian Wars, the planet Roseau had been a central point in smuggling routes that operated across Acadia. Smugglers made use of the "Bodie Metro", a network of illegal routes between the planet's three largest cities - Leafield, Rosaria, and Teagues - that had been established from the earliest days of Roseau's colonisation. This network circumvented established government infrastructure using the natural geography of the region, making particular use of winding waterways and underground tunnel systems that were obscured by thick jungles and mangrove swamps. Travellers using these routes had to overcome natural obstacles, local predators and disasters such as flash floods.
Breakup of the Acadian Federation
On 9 August 2274, during the early stages of the break up of the Federation of Acadia, federal forces were deployed to positions throughout Roseau to defend in case of attack. By this point, the situation had become severe enough that the Acadian military was positioning units considered unreliable in rural areas to limit their ability to attempt coups or strike key targets in cities.
The independence of Mediana was declared on the 25th of December, 2274, and a nationalist government was organised in Teagues, Roseau.
As a result of Roseau's already established smuggling network, the planet became a key site for managing logistics and the transport of military materiel over the course of the war. The Acadian National Army had already begun coopting the Bodie Metro as covert trails and an early logistics network by the 2260s. By the late 2270s, the region was being used to support clandestine troop and equipment movements through multiple star systems, to the extent that by 2278 up to half of the foreign materiel employed by the Acadian National Army and secessionist forces during the Acadian Wars had been transported through Roseau's Three Cities.
American Intervention and Withdrawal
In 2278, the United States of America led a coalition to intervene in the Acadian Wars, aiming to prevent the dissolution of the Federation of Acadia. Mediana became a theatre of this intervention in the region in the early stages of American involvement, with American troops making landfall on Roseau on the 14th of August, 2278. The aim of the coalition's operations on the planet was to destroy ANA forces present and disrupt the supply routes that had been coopted by secessionist forces. American intervention in Mediana was focused on the Bodie Coast, a rugged region dominated by hilly jungles and extensive waterways that contained the three largest cities on Roseau.
During the early stages of the operation, Roseau was considered a minor theatre - just one landing site among hundreds - despite the planet's role as a centre of interstellar smuggling networks in the Acadian Expanse. While American intervention was initially successful, it rapidly devolved into urban and jungle guerrilla warfare.
By 2282, ANA logistics had developed to the point that smuggling routes on the Bodie Coast had become relatively unimportant, further diminishing the theatre's importance in the eyes of the coalition. This led to a reduction of American forces present in the system, for both those on the ground and the naval forces present in orbit of Roseau. Following this reduction in strength, an American-Acadian naval group was forced to withdraw from the system by ANA naval forces which established a blockade of Mediana, forcing a situation on Roseau for almost 2 weeks where, for the first time in American military history, United States troops fought in a theatre where the enemy held orbital supremacy. This marked a significant blow to American military prestige.
Particularly embarrassing for the United States Army was the 99 day siege of Firebase Hector in 2283, an outpost between the Three Cities centred around REFLEX BOW Radar Station. Despite an eventual military victory by American forces, the station was abandoned by May of the same year - the first retreat in a total withdrawal from Roseau.
Post-Acadian Wars
Following the end of the Acadian Wars, conflict continued throughout the Bodie Coast on Roseau between government forces and nationalist groups. In 2285, the now infamous site of Firebase Hector was occupied by the July 17 Brigade, a fascist guerrilla group backed by the Axis Powers.
