The League of Nations is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to maintaining international peace and security. As outlined in its founding Covenant, its goals include fostering friendly relations among nations, promoting international cooperation, and serving as a central platform for coordinating interstellar action. It currently counts over 500 member states, encompassing nearly all sovereign nations in the Orion Arm—excluding those in the Far Frontier.

History

Originally founded in 1920 at the Paris Peace Conference to prevent future wars, aggression by the Axis powers meant the League had lost much of its credibility by the 1930s. It played little role during the First Scinfaxi War, but was revitalized in 1962 following the French Crisis. This new iteration inherited some of the League's traditions and assets, but was largely restructured as an organization.

Throughout the 21st century, Cold War politics often paralyzed the League’s decision-making. It intervened primarily in conflicts that threatened the stability of Quarantine Zones or involved the Scinfaxi.

At the dawn of the space race and the interstellar age, the League was briefly entrusted with oversight over major components of the Centauri Project. As colonization efforts expanded exponentially, its role evolved into the Sanctuary Worlds program. Hundreds of League of Nations Mandates were established across the Orion Arm, disproportionately settled by the diaspora of refugees left stateless following the First Scinfaxi War.

The League was heavily active on Earth during the final years of the Evacuation and the Second Scinfaxi War. Many Mandates became critical nodes in interstellar supply chains, but were left economically devastated and politically adrift during the Interstellar Dark Age. As translight travel and communication were gradually restored, tensions emerged between the League, its superpower backers, and former Mandates-turned-independent states—culminating in devastating conflicts such as the Solar Wars.

These conflicts forced a major restructure of the League, and membership has surged since the 2230s as non-legacy nations have joined. In 2249, many of the Orion Arm’s Great Powers were granted a permanent seat on the League of Nations Security Council, joining the United States, German Reich, Soviet Union, and the Empire of Japan.
